Dr. Johnson's teaching philosophy.
"I am driven to teach by a desire to excite and engage students. I was fortunate to discover my passion for geology during my education, and I now teach to help expose students to the awesome world of science. My teaching philosophy is one of inclusiveness, flexibility, and innovation. Curious and interested scientists, students, and collaborators come from all backgrounds, and I seek to engage a wide variety of perspectives. In classes and labs, I foster a welcoming environment, where students are comfortable to engage in discussion and ask questions. Often I will start a lecture or introduction with a quote or an overarching question, to help us (the students and me) turn on our brains and contextualize the day’s topic with larger, abstract thinking. I value the importance of interaction, active engagement, and self-directed learning wherever possible. "
